FIFA scraps $20B plan, UEFA demands Infantino resign, Women's WC 2027 countdown tightens
1
FIFA forced to scrap $20B World Cup investment plan. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was forced to withdraw his plan to sell a 20% stake in a new $20 billion commercial subsidiary — covering men's and women's World Cups and Club World Cups — after all 55 UEFA members threatened to boycott FIFA competitions. The scheme collapsed on July 31 after Infantino's White House-connected senior adviser resigned and the AFC joined UEFA and CONCACAF in opposition. FIFA's own chief operating officer publicly stated that staff were deceived about the plan's development. (CNN / Al Jazeera, July 31)

UEFA declares loss of confidence in Infantino. On August 1, UEFA formally declared it has lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino and called for his resignation — stopping just short of immediately triggering a formal no-confidence vote. Europe's governing body condemned the "shabby, back-room, opaque deal" and warned it will pursue accountability. Under FIFA statutes, if one-fifth of member associations (43 federations) submit a written request, an extraordinary congress must be convened. UEFA's 55 aligned members could easily clear that bar, putting Infantino's position under unprecedented pressure. (CNN / Al Jazeera, August 1)

Women's World Cup 2027: UEFA playoffs open October 7. With Spain, France, Germany and Denmark already through via UEFA's direct route, eight remaining European spots will be decided in playoffs beginning October 7–13, 2026 — now fewer than 10 weeks away. Brazil 2027 opens on June 24 next year; CONCACAF hosts its Women's Championship in November 2026, offering four automatic berths plus two play-off spots. Inter-confederation play-offs in February 2027 settle the final three places. The qualification race is entering its decisive phase across all confederations. (ESPN / FIFA)
